Digital twin technology in service of natural water purification

About the project

Dashboards and a digital twin for nature-based water treatment

PWN, the drinking water company for North Holland, is exploring natural water purification methods where ecosystems do the heavy lifting. Seamless is responsible for the dashboards and digital twin technology that support this work.It started with a proof of concept: a digital twin of PWN's test pond, where plants, soil layers and water flow transform murky green water into clear drinking water within a day. We built the digital replica that models, monitors and visualises the behaviour of this natural system. Alongside the twin, we developed a public water quality dashboard, 3D visualisations and an AI-powered knowledge graph that brings together ecological data from multiple sources.

A successful proof of concept with full-scale ambition

The test pond proof of concept was a success, demonstrating that a digital twin can meaningfully support nature-based water treatment. The public dashboard is live, giving both internal teams and external audiences real-time insight into water quality data. The next step is the planned climate buffer along the IJsselmeer coastline near Andijk, where PWN aims to apply nature-based purification at a much larger scale. The dashboards and digital twin infrastructure developed during the test phase form the foundation for that next milestone.
